Last week our patrol team conducted a traffic saturation patrol in the Waldport area with a specific emphasis on the safety of students traveling to school during the morning. This was following numerous complaints of speeding and other violations effecting the safety of our community members during the morning commute hours. On October 25, 2023, a team of our deputies deployed throughout the city of Waldport to increase visual presence, awareness, and education about the
increased dangers present during commuter hours.
The saturation patrol was held between 7:00am and 10:00am. A total of 22 traffic stops were conducted during this period for violations ranging from speeding, failing to stop at stop signs, and other violations related to driver and vehicle licensing. Out of the 22 traffic stops, a total of 5 citations were issued. Following the event, Sheriff Landers received written correspondence from an appreciative community member. "On a daily basis, we see speeders, stop sign runners, close calls of cars passing walking students and illegal passes of the bus with and without the Red Student loading lights on," the writer said.
"Our primary focus when conducting traffic enforcement operations is education," stated Sheriff Landers. "There are times when citations are warranted, but our primary goal is to increase driver awareness and overall safety in our communities for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike."
