3.6 Mile - N. Beaver Creek - Possible Road Closure

Continued Monitoring - 3.6 mi. N. Beaver Creek Road. (Posted: 9:00am, 11-27-17)

On April 17, 2017, a slide was observed on a 180 foot section of N. Beaver Creek Road at about mile post 3.6.  LiDAR imaging indicates slope instability on the southern edge of a larger previously mapped landslide.  The roadway in the central portion of the slide heaved upward about four feet and shifted twelve feet to the east.  Significant cracking has been observed in the roadway and across the slope up gradient of the road.  Down gradient, springs and seeps were noted in the slope.

The County hired Foundation Engineering Inc (FEI) a geotechnical firm to examine the site and make recommendations for its stabilization.  FEI drilled two exploratory borings into the road and installed an inclinometer (a device that measures earth movement).  The inclinometer was read in early August and recommendations were given to the county in early September.

Several mitigation options were offered that included realigning the road, constructing a retaining wall, and buttressing the toe of the slope.  The County decided to install horizontal drains to reduce the weight and improve the strength of the soil within the slide area.  Six wells were drilled into the toe of the slope and each extends up gradient about 250 feet.  Screened PVC pipe was installed in the borings to drain the formation.  The end pipes were connected to a manifold that discharges to the creek.  Initially the flow was about 7.5 gallons per minute but this flow is expected to increase during the rainy weather.  Decreasing groundwater in this area is expected to stabilize the slope. The area will remain under observation until spring when it will be measured for movement.  Further work is dependent on the results of the stabilization effort.
